2nd Grade Hundertwasser Paintings
One of my 2nd grades is finishing up their Hundertwasser "Human Nature Architecture" paintings and they look great! These brilliant little minds were able to understand the complex mind of artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser and recreate some of his works. Some students even incorporated their own ideas into their compositions. I thought I would post some of their works in progress so you could get a sneak peek!
5th Grade Ansel Adams Paintings
This is a favorite painting project of mine. Students not only get to learn about the gray scale, tinting, shading, mixing colors, and paint application, BUT they also get to learn about some beautiful black and white photography. What makes me even more excited is having several students approach me during and after class because they want me to write down the artist's name for them to research from home. I created this lesson for my 4th grade maybe four years ago. I did it with my 5th grade last year and I am in the process of getting my 5th grade to apply the paint for the third time doing this project. I would like to add more process pictures to this section but thought I would start off with a handful! I should also mention that we are working with two mediums (student's choice of magazine shreddings or paint) and 3 different sizes (12X18, 24X 36, and a large poster that I am not quite sure of the measurements at the moment). The size different should make for a beautiful display.
4th Grade Japanese Scroll Paintings
I will come clean here and admit I was hesitant to do this project at all because I felt intimidated by it. I knew my students were fully capable of creating a beautiful drawing but applying the watercolor paint made me nervous (as many of them never worked with watercolor paints before). To save the trouble of making a mess trying to outline with black paint or ink, we used black colored pencil instead and also put a little bit of shading in with the colored pencil. I decided to post some of the scroll paintings before adding paint. They look gorgeous. We are also going to write our names on the scroll painting in Japanese lettering and attach the finished product to a string and HOPEFULLY two dowels.
1st Grade Line Design Cities
I like to get the kids started early using rulers- even if it doesn't work out so well! My first graders were faced with the difficult task of using a rule to make 4-6 buildings and the straight lines that go in them. They did not need to use a ruler if they wanted to make wavy or zigzag lines (I'm not that cruel)! We are in the process of finishing them and I will have more to post very, very soon. I have been super busy between taking process pictures, finished work pictures, displaying, grading, and running 3 days of art club! I managed to snag one picture of one of my 1st grader's cities. They are using colored pencils to color and black markers to trace. I must say, I am impressed.
3rd Grade African Art (Animals and Jazz Musicians)
We were a little late on the Black History Month deadline so we transitioned the project a bit to still involve African culture and art but stretch our deadline! I am posting some of the African Animals to begin with. Students were asked to incorporate African textiles/designs into their composition. I asked the students to choose where they wanted to put it so that our final projects varied! Some students chose to incorporate design in a frame around their picture, some put it in clothing or inside the animals, and others applied design to the background. We are using oil pastels OR colored pencils to color in our pictures. I like my students to have the freedom to choose a medium that they are more comfortable with using so most of the time I will throw down some options.
